Although air quality in cities has been improving continuously for several years due to more modern vehicles, road traffic is still a major cause of NO2 pollution in cities. Various measures are being taken to improve air quality, e.g. reducing the speed limit, banning vehicles with high emissions or environmentally friendly traffic control systems, which we will discuss in this webinar in detail. There are various environmentally friendly traffic control measures, e.g. dynamic speed limits, green waves or a signal control programme that minimises emissions. Proving that a specific signal control programme improves air quality is costly, but can be validated with local measuring stations and emission measurements on vehicles.
An alternative, which can also be used in the planning process, is the use of a traffic flow simulation linked with an emission model. In this case, the traffic control is mapped in the simulation model, vehicle movements are calibrated with real data and emissions are calculated from the simulated vehicle movements. The requirements for the calibration of the traffic flow simulation is not only that traffic correlations can be represented in the simulation, but also that vehicles drive realistically with regard to their speeds and accelerations in order to calculate realistic emissions.
