Most of the traditional, commercially available, signal timing optimization tools rely on relatively simple, HCM-like, deterministic traffic models that are used to evaluate the quality of proposed signal timings.
Such tools are usually quick to deliver optimal solutions but heavily limited in terms of both:
1. Features that can be modeled (usually cannot model multimodal operations, dynamics of actuated signal operations, etc.) and 2. Performance measures that can be used as objective functions in the optimization process.
Finally, once such tools complete optimizations, a user is usually ‘left alone’ with a final signal timing plan without ability to comprehensively analyze how such a plan performs:
1. when compared with the other evaluated signal timing plans, and
2. from various multi-objective perspectives. In this webinar, we present and demonstrate a Software-as-a-service (SAAS) platform where Retime, an evolutionary signal optimization program, is coupled with the Vissim, a well-known traffic microsimulation tool that can realistically model a variety of field traffic and signal operations.
The platform utilizes the power of cloud-computing to run tens/hundreds of computationally-expensive simulations in parallel. The webinar will concurrently run a presentation and a live demonstration of Retime: Vissim optimization, which will be done on a small urban network. Results from the previous signal optimizations will be used to showcase comprehensive data analytics of evaluated signal timing plans.
