PTV Drive-In: Development of Traffic Collision Simulation Technology for Estimating Effectiveness of Vehicle Safety Functions

Recently, more vehicle models are equipped with advanced emergency braking (AEB). The effectiveness of AEB in collision damage mitigation is assessed in a proving ground following a prescribed test protocol. In reality, there may be various situations in which AEB is activated. It is difficult to conduct multiple vehicle tests considering the variety. In this presenation, we will demonstrate a methodology to simulate near miss cases in various road traffic situations. The methodology estimates the effectiveness of AEB in vehicle collision at an intersection through computer simulation.

About the presenter: Dr.  Yuichi Kitagawa is Chief Professional Engineer at Mobility Evaluation and Engineering Division of Toyota Motor Corporation. With other 30 years’ experience at the auto industry, Dr. Kitagawa is an expert on collision safety. He has a Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) present ample opportunities for energy efficient driving by better planning. The interactions between them and human drivers play a key role in determining this efficiency. This free webinar will provide an overview of frameworks to interface CAV control schemes and on road experiments with PTV Vissim traffic simulation tool. It will highlight energy and traffic efficiency potentials of CAVs. The presenter will also discuss the impact of anticipative vehicle guidance on energy and traffic efficiency of CAVs and surrounding human-driven vehicles, resulting from a US Department of Energy funded project.

About the presenter: Ardalan Vahidi is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University, USA. His core research is on CAV and electrified vehicles, their impact on energy use and flow of mixed traffic. Prof. Vahidi held scientific visiting positions at the University of California, Berkeley, BMW Technology Office in California, and at IFP Energies Nouvelles, in France. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology.

交通事故シミュレーションを用いた自動車安全機能の効果予測
近年、多くの車種に衝突被害軽減ブレーキ(AEB)が搭載されるようになってきた。AEBによる被害軽減効果は安全アセスメントで定められた一定の試験条件で評価される。一方、実際の車両走行においてAEBが作動する条件は多様であり、それを網羅する多回数の試験を実施することは難しい。本講演では、道路交通における多様なヒヤリハット状況をシミュレーションする技術を紹介する。実際に起こり得る交差点事故をコンピューター上で模擬し、AEBによる被害軽減効果を予測する。
